This age is obtained from radiometric dating and is assumed by evolutionists to provide a sufficiently long time-frame for Darwinian evolution.

This is the crucial point: it is claimed by some that an old earth supports evolutionary theory and by implication removes the need for biblical creation.

Four principles of relative dating are of importance for this question: 1.

After using this inaccurate method, scientists began to look at the different archaeological strata or layers of earth and use a comparison type method based on the idea that the earths geological layers are oldest at the bottom and that "an object cannot be older than the materials of which it is composed" (Dating, paragraph 2).

Some claim Genesis in particular, and the Bible in general looks mythical from this standpoint.

A full discussion of the topic must therefore include the current scientific challenge to the OE concept.

The age of objects can then be determined by comparing the object's relative position in the layers to other known items.
